Your Guide to Thanksgiving Day from Local Restaurants and Makers

From classic turkey to Cantonese duck to BBQ, here are ideas for making an easy, jazzy, fun Thanksgiving

Just a couple weeks to one of my favorite holidays of the year, Thanksgiving. In the past, I’ve treated it as my 100-mile sourced Super Bowl of cooking, but in the past year, Covid dampened plans and this year a kitchen renovation means our family is looking for outsourced solutions.

But DMV residents, there are so many wonderful things to order now from local restaurants and makers—but time cutoffs are real, so don’t let the days pass without ordering or making reservations for a feast at a great restaurant.

PS: Want to cook your own bird, but have missed the cutoffs from local poultry farmers for a free-range, natural bird? Check out ButcherBox, a company that delivers 100% grass-fed beef, free-range organic chicken, humanely raised pork and wild-caught seafood directly to your door. They have a promo for new members now that includes a free turkey. Link is here to sign up.

What about serving up a deep fried bird? Something I’ve always wanted to do, but it always sounded to messy and potentially hazardous to take on. No worries, you have a friend in Mark Bucher at Medium Rare who is hosting his 13th Annual Turkey Fry at the Medium Rare Cleveland Park location. There’s no charge for frying turkeys, but Medium Rare is encouraging participants to donate up to $25 per fried turkey to Bucher’s “Feed the Fridge” initiative—which places refrigerators stocked with free, nourishing meals across the DMV to help those facing hunger. To donate to Feed the Fridge, participants can visit this feedthefridge.org. The first drop into the deep fryer takes place at 10:00am on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, with eight fryers running taking on up to 24 turkeys an hour. The event runs until 3:00 p.m. First come, first served reservations are available by signing up via SignUpGenius—with a limited number of walk-ups allowed. Turkeys must be fully thawed and weigh between eight and 12 pounds. Also, use the link if you want to volunteer to deliver Thanksgiving meals!
