Edible DC: Farmers Market Guide

In cooperation with American Farmland Trust

There’s no better place to dig into fresh, local food than at one of the many farmers’ markets around the region. Six days a week (just don’t count on Mondays), markets pop up across the DMV, offering a direct line to the area’s growers—year-round.

Markets are more than just places to shop—they’re communities full of characters who are quick with a story, a recipe tip, or a bit of banter. On a perfect sunny day, with tables piled high with a rainbow of just-picked produce, it can feel like dinner and a show.

Shopping the market opens up creative possibilities in the kitchen. You might go in for tomatoes and walk out inspired to make a tart you hadn’t even thought of.

And when you buy directly from the person who grew the food you get insight. Ask about heirloom varieties, growing practices, or what’s tasting best right now. It’s a chance to connect with your food, and the people behind it.

Making a market part of your shopping routine means supporting the hardworking folks who plant, harvest, and haul these goods to town—keeping more value in the hands of those who do the bulk of the labor.
