We've all seen it depicted in the movies: the visit to the carnival, or to the shop with the neon sign, or to the mysterious old woman outside the medieval village. She performs a tarot reading, ominously turning over each card one by one, until it comes time for the last card - Death! And after several more plot developments the ill-fated character eventually meets her demise, unable to escape fate.
That's definitely not how tarot works. It doesn't have to be creepy, it definitely isn't going to tell you when you're going to die, and it doesn't require a visit to an old-timey carnival. Any of us can learn to read tarot cards and to employ them as a practical and effective tool for checking in with ourselves, organizing our thoughts, and helping others sort out their emotions. And yes, sometimes it actually will tell you (with uncanny accuracy) if that person you like has a crush on you or if it's a good idea to accept that new promotion.
This class is designed for anyone and everyone who is curious about tarot and looking to learn more about this old but not-as-ancient-as-you've-been-told divination practice. While it can take years to perfect the art of reading the cards, this four hour (minus 20 minute break) class will give you a strong primer on everything you need to know to begin your tarot practice and expand your reading skills going forward.
No prior experience of any kind with tarot is necessary.

o Preparing to perform a tarot reading
o Going beyond the basic card meanings in tarot books

o Are tarot spreads even necessary?
o The roles of imagery and intuition

HOW TO PREPARE
If you already own a tarot deck, please bring it. If not, decks will also be available for attendees to borrow. You will need paper and a writing utensil to take notes; tarot journals will be available for purchase. This event is BYOB.
Optional: Prepare ahead of time by familiarizing yourself with the individual card meanings. A good first resource is the little white book or companion book that may have come with your deck, though these vary in depth and quality. If you don’t have your own deck or would like a different resource, I personally really like the card meaning descriptions at biddytarot.com.
